Professor Marko Turpeinen appointed Director of EIT ICT Labs Helsinki Node

Professor Marko Turpeinen has been appointed Director of the Helsinki Node of ICT Labs, one of the Knowledge and Innovation Communities (KICs) of the European Institute of Innovation and Technology (EIT). The Helsinki Node is located on the Aalto University campus in Otaniemi and its founding members are Nokia, VTT Technical Research Centre of Finland and Aalto University.The other nodes of EIT ICT Labs are in Stockholm, Berlin, Eindhoven and Paris.

Professor Turpeinen has a Dr.Tech. Degree in Computer Science from Helsinki University of Technology (TKK) and a M.Sc. Degree in Media Arts and Sciences from Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). He has been a Professor in Media Technology at Kungliga Tekniska Högskolan (KTH) in Stockholm since 2006. He has also acted as Programme Director of the Network Society research programme at the Helsinki Institute for Information Technology HIIT since 2007. In addition to the present appointment at the EIT ICT Labs Helsinki Node, he will continue to be closely affiliated with HIIT and KTH, which are both actively participating in the EIT ICT Labs activities.

EIT promotes European innovation

Established in 2008, the European Institute of Innovation and Technology (EIT) aims to promote sustainable economic growth and competitiveness in Europe. Direct EU funding for EIT during the period 2008–2013 will amount to EUR 308 million. The purpose of EIT is to facilitate the realisation of innovations and function as an idea incubator. Strategic planning and decision-making is the mandate of the EIT Governing Board, which is comprised of eighteen leading minds from the fields of research, education and business. Finland's representative on the Governing Board is Professor Yrjö Neuvo. EIT's operative units are independent, co-operative Knowledge and Innovation Communities (KIC), which are comprised of universities, institutes of higher education, research institutes, companies and other interest groups.
