Conversation analysis (CA) is originally a fenomenologically inspired approach to study
the elementary forms of human conduct and communication. It can be
applied for deciphering the new patterns of interaction and sociability,
and user experiences in the context of (new) media and communication technologies.
The ongoing project "Media, Families and Children's well-being" aims ultimately at finding out
the way socialization is changed in the context of new media. I will present some CA inspired
views on the contemporary family interactions, based on about 200 hours videotaped family life.
Generally, I discuss about the possibilities of CA, and present some new findings,
e.g., personalized/individualized quality time.
About the speaker:
Ilkka Arminen is a professor of sociology in university of Helsinki. His research concerns media, technology and social interaction, particularly the intersection between technology and the social organization of activities. He is currently doing research on material sociology, exploring the materiality of social practices in everyday contexts and workspaces.
