SAB EVALUATED HIIT
The Scientific Advisory Board evaluated HIIT research on 26-28 May. The preliminary report was positive, but it also addressed several points for development. The SAB will publish the final report within next few weeks.
INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCES IN HELSINKI IN JULY
In the beginning of July 2008, HIIT will be involved in the organization of several international conferences in Helsinki to be run partially in parallel: MLG 2008 on Mining and Learning with Graphs, ICML 2008 on Machine Learning, UAI 2008 on Uncertainty in Artificial Intelligence, and COLT 2008 on Learning Theory.

SENIOR RESEARCHER AND POSTDOC POSITIONS FILLED
The HIIT board has nominated D.Sc.(Tech.) Petteri Kaski (ADA), Dr.Soc.Sc Pekka Räsänen (NS), and Ph.D. Antti Oulasvirta (NS) in senior research positions. It also nominated Dr. Ruishan Zhang (FI) and Ph.D. Teemu Roos (PAS) to post-doc positions. All nominations are for three-year terms starting on 1 August, 2008.

ICT SHOK FUTURE INTERNET LAUNCHED
ICT SHOK Future Internet research programme has officially been launched. The new programme is a joint research programme of a range of leading ICT companies and Finnish research institutions and universities. The programme website will be published on Monday.

BEAWARE EU PROJECT LAUNCHED
The EU project BeAware has been officially launched. HIIT coordinates the consortium involving industrial and academic partners from Finland, Sweden, and Italy. The project will study how consumer's awareness of energy consumption can be facilitated by combining sensors monitoring energy use with mobile and ambient user interfaces.
HIIT BOARD MEMBER THOMAS WILHELMSSON ELECTED TO THE UH RECTOR
Professor of Civil and Commercial Law Thomas Wilhelmsson, 58, was elected to the Rector of the University of Helsinki. He will commence his term on 1 August 2008.

ICA'S KIRKMAN MEDAL TO PETTERI KASKI
The Institute of Combinatorics and its Applications (ICA) has awarded the Kirkman Medal for 2007 to Petteri Kaski. Kaski currently holds a post-doc position at HIIT.
FIPA ANNUAL DOCTORAL THESIS PRIZE TO MIKA RAENTO
The Finnish Information Processing Association FIPA (in Finnish: Tietotekniikan liitto) has awarded its Annual Doctoral Thesis Prize to Mika Raento. Raento's research was a part of HIIT's Context project.
