CHI 2008 honors HIIT’s touchscreen research

The Helsinki Institute for Information Technology's multitouch screen research team has been honored as an Award Nominee at the conference of Computer-Human Interaction (CHI). Only 5% of all submissions to the conference were considered Award Nominees by the SIGCHI "Best of CHI" program. HIIT is pleased to be recognized by the Special Interest Group on Computer-Human Interaction (SIGCHI) for its CHI Paper.

CityWall multitouch screens, developed at HIIT, can be dozens of meters wide. Multitouch screens can support any display size as well as the addition of window glass between the user and the display.

Infrared based computer vision recognizes users' hand movements and adapts to changing light conditions. It can be used both during the day and at night. A multitouch screen is presently in test use in Lasipalatsi in the center of Helsinki, Finland.

"Compared to earlier solutions, CityWall displays are much less expensive to build. In addition, they now support large numbers of users on displays simultaneously. The screens are well suited for interactive communication in public spaces; indoors or outdoors and at any time of the day", said Giulio Jacucci, Ph.D. Adjunct Professor, HIIT.

The development of the multitouch screen is a part of the Network Society research programme of HIIT. HIIT is a joint research institute comprised of the University of Helsinki and the Helsinki University of Technology.
