Helsinki University of Technology TKK and the University of Helsinki (UH) announce the following vacancy:

DIRECTOR
of the Helsinki Institute for Information Technology HIIT

The Helsinki Institute for Information Technology HIIT is a joint research institution of Helsinki University of Technology TKK and the University of Helsinki (UH). The director shall be employed by both these universities.

HIIT conducts world-class research on future information technology. Its research ranges from fundamental methods and technologies to novel applications and their impact on people and society. Last year the total budget of the institute was 7.5 million euro with 200 researchers and staff members.

HIIT's work is organized into four research programs: Algorithmic Data Analysis, Future Internet, Network Society, and Probabilistic Adaptive Systems.

RESPONSIBILITIES

The responsibilities of the HIIT director include the following:

  • Leading, developing and supervising the activities of HIIT
  • Taking responsibility for HIIT’s budget and economy
  • Heading the staff of HIIT
  • Making proposals and decisions for appointments to posts within HIIT in accordance with the regulations of both parent universities
  • Preparing and proposing issues for the HIIT board
  • Taking responsibility for HIIT’s research contracts and ensuring that the contracts are made in accordance with the codes of both parent universities
  • Carrying out scientific research in the core areas of HIIT
  • Teaching at the doctoral level

The director shall work in close cooperation with HIIT's board, the strategic decision-making body of the institute.

DURATION

The post will be filled for a three year period beginning 1 January 2009.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • A world recognized leader in the field of Computer Science, having demonstrated a deep and broad understanding of computer science and information technology, of their applications and of  impact on users and society
  • A visionary and strategist, highly technical, articulate, and a sophisticated communicator
  • Ability to
    • Lead and manage a team of highly skilled research professionals
    • Create and articulate management processes and show leadership
    • Attract, lead, and inspire a diverse group of talented researchers in a multicultural environment, both on-site and from afar
    • Influence stakeholders, including leaders and technologists in industry as well as in academic or university settings
    • Influence internal and external partners through personal stature and interpersonal skills
  • Knowledge of research in companies, research institutes and parent universities, TKK and UH, is preferred.
