CLAUDE E. SHANNON AWARD TO JORMA RISSANEN
IEEE Information Theory Society has awarded the Claude E. Shannon Award for 2009 to HIIT Research Fellow Jorma Rissanen. Rissanen has published over 140 papers in a variety of areas including lossless and lossy compression, probability and statistics, and systems theory. He is best known for introducing and promoting the Minimum Description Length (MDL) principle for model selection and statistical inference. He was an early inventor of arithmetic coding.

ALMOST 800 PARTICIPANTS IN THE CONFERENCES ON ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE
Several international conferences on artificial intelligence have attracted almost 800 participants to Helsinki in July. The series of conferences was the most important international scientific event of year on machine learning.

OTASIZZLE LAUNCHED
OtaSizzle, test environment for mobile social media services, has been launched. The goal is to make OtaSizzle a "living lab" for thousands of users in Otaniemi, with extensions in greater Helsinki.

NEW ARTICLES OF HIIT APPROVED
New articles of HIIT (uusi johtosääntö) have been approved by TKK and the University of Helsinki. According to the new articles, there will be one Director of HIIT who will be in charge of both HIIT TKK and HIIT University of Helsinki.

You can register now for Nordic Cultural Commons Conference 2008. It takes place in Stockholm, Sweden, on 22-23 October. HIIT organizes the conference in co-operation with the Royal University of Technology and Creative Commons Nordic network.
