  • HIIT Spektri's and Otaniemi's telephone numbers to change 2 November 2009

    16 Oct 2009 - Due to Helsinki University of Technology becoming part of Aalto University at the beginning of next year, TKK phone numbers will change before the turn of the year. In HIIT, this means that landline numbers to HIIT Spektri and HIIT Otaniemi as well as to all researchers and other staff at these sites change.

  • Gamers keep on shopping regardless of the income level

    9 Oct 2009 - Active game players buy downloadable video games regardless of their income level. The amount of money they use for gaming increases only when they get more spare time. According to a survey by Helsinki Institute for Information Technology HIIT and the University of Tampere most gamers use less than € 50 per month for gaming.

    5 Oct 2009 - Even though the visual cortex is one of the most studied parts of the brain, surprisingly little is known about how exactly images are processed to leave us with a coherent percept of the world around us, so we can recognize a friend or drive on a crowded street without any effort. In his thesis Urs Köster constructured probabilistic models of natural images. to understand the structure of the stimulus.

  • HIIT Director Heikki Mannila appointed as the first Vice Rector of Aalto University

    25 Sep 2009 - The Aalto University Board has appointed four Vice Rectors for Aalto University for five-year terms. Professor Heikki Mannila, currently Director of HIIT,  was appointed as the first Vice Rector in charge of Academic Affairs (Research and Education – also the Vice-President of Aalto University).

  • Study: mobile microbloggers struggle to make their postings interesting

    21 Sep 2009 - A study shows that mobile microbloggers struggle hard is to make postings interesting enough to keep audience coming back and commenting. The analysis by researchers from Helsinki Institute for Information Technology HIIT, Google and Elisa shows that microbloggers sometimes put in teasers to postings and highlight interesting aspects of their everyday experiences, inviting others to comment.

  • Scientific quality of HIIT's research at an outstanding international level

    16 Sep 2009 - Aalto RAE panelists praise the HIIT research quality. The Aalto University Research Assessment Exercise 2009 report describes the scientific quality of the HIIT research to be at an outstanding international level. The scientific and societal impact as well as the research environment and the future potential of HIIT were considered very good.

  • Researchers launched new mobile social media services

    16 Sep 2009 - HIIT and other Aalto researchers have developed new social media services for the recently created Aalto University in Finland. Ossi and Kassi services have been developed especially for mobile use. The goal of the OtaSizzle project is to find out new ways people use social media services and how capabilities of smart phones can be best exploited.

    15 Sep 2009 - The Probabilistic Adaptive Systems (PAS) programme has been changed to Algoritmic Systems (AS). The new research programme studies theory and practice of modelling, design and management of complex systems.

  • Andrei Khurri's Lic. Tech Thesis "Evaluating IP Mobility and Security on Lightweight Hardware" approved

    28 Aug 2009 - Helsinki University of Technology TKK has accepted the Lic. Tech. thesis of Andrei Khurri "Evaluating IP Mobility and Security on Lightweight Hardware". For the thesis Khurri evaluated performance of the Host Identity Protocol involving public-key cryptography and IPsec encryption and identified scenarios for such computationally intensive operations to run feasibly on resource-constrained mobile devices and Wi-Fi access points.
